Ankara: Created and Styled by me
African prints known as Ankara or Dutch wax can never go out of style. You can turn things way up with African prints.
I asked one of my friends that went to Nigeria 2014 November to buy me Ankara; I was very specific that I wanted Kiri Kiri Star pattern because Pan-African club girls in my school wanted to use African material in their fashion event March 2015. This pattern used to be the old days’ print and it’s only used when women go for their August meeting or when there is a cultural event going on that women have to dance in a group, they will tie the same Kiri Kiri Star wrapper in any color they choose; the most popular ones are the yellow ones.
I was excited when my friend came back with the Ankara; it was six yards. The Pan-African fashion event did not hold again so the Ankara wasn’t used anymore, I have no idea what I was going to do with it, I met a tailor and she told me it will cost $120 to make the style I wanted. Omg! $120 just for one dress? This is a lot of money.
How I created my Ankara style, I woke up one day in the middle of the night with some ideas on my mind on how to cut and make trouser, I took a pencil and a piece of paper and drew it. The next day, I was on phone with the person that bought me this Ankara talking generally about his trip to Nigeria and the trouser mouth cage style came to my mind. As I was talking with him, I was drawing the cage style that came to my mind on the paper, he said to me “Oge you sound somehow distracted.” I said yes kind of. He asked me what I was doing, I told him a style came to my mind and I don’t want to lose it so I have to pen it down immediately lol. He said “Omg! This is beautiful!” We laughed over it; the same day I made this trouser and sent the picture to him. He could not believe it.
The next day on my way to New Jersey, I wore the trouser, our house Nanny saw it and said “Oge don’t tell me you made this trouser,” I replied her yes I made it last night. She started screaming “Doctor come and see, your niece is a fashion designer!” My aunt who she referred to as Doctor came downstairs, she saw me and stood still for like 5 seconds, speechless. She later asked me “Who gave me the idea of how I made the trouser down cage-like style?” I told her no one. She said “Wow! You’re really talented!” Also, I made a skirt, and a long dress with the six yards, I will post the other ones I made soon on my blog. I was excited about the styles I made because I have never been to fashion school or tailoring school before, I did not look the style up on YouTube or saw the style anywhere before I made the trouser.
I thank God for giving me such inspiration. I used to make a lot of clothes when I had more time but I am literally busy these days. What do you think of my style? I will appreciate if you leave comments.
This was the picture our house nanny saw and screamed. I took this picture July 2015 on my way to New Jersey. My friend saw me in New Jersey and screamed Oge you’re a witch! We laughed over it.
